How a holiday in Jamaica became a compassion mission on the streets of Ocho Rios.
Elsa— founder. Raised on a farm outside Lisbon, made her home in London and started Angels on the Ground after a holiday in Jamaica became a purpose.

In her own words

I have never had much. I have always given something anyway.

A farm in the north of Lisbon

My name is Elsa. I am Portuguese and I was brought up on a farm in the north of Lisbon, surrounded by family, animals and love. We did not have much materially, but I had an incredible childhood and I was raised with strong foundations. I learned from a very young age the importance of family, kindness, compassion and looking after others. Animals were always a huge part of my life, and growing up surrounded by them created a connection that has stayed with me ever since. The irony is that I have never had much myself, and I still don’t. But I have always believed that you don’t need to have a lot in order to give something to another person.

At eighteen, I went to London

I wanted to explore my ambitions and see what life could offer me. I loved the city, I loved the people, and London eventually became my home. But the beginning was not easy. Living in a country that was not your own was very different, particularly in those days when there was no internet and communication was not as easy as it is today. During those first weeks, months and even years, you often depended on the kindness of other people — friends, colleagues, neighbours and sometimes complete strangers.

“Sometimes a person doesn’t need somebody to change their entire life. Sometimes they simply need someone to help them through one difficult moment.”

I know how it feels

At one point in my own life, I became homeless

I know what it feels like to have very little. I know what it feels like to depend on circumstances, and I know how quickly life can change. But my experience taught me something important. Being homeless does not define who a person is. I was not a bad person before I became homeless, and I did not become a bad person because I became homeless. I was fortunate to have grown up with a loving and grounded family foundation, so when I was given the opportunity, I was able to turn my life
around. Not everyone who experiences homelessness has had the same foundation, opportunities or support. That is why we should never judge someone by the circumstances we can see.

“Behind every person there is a story. Sometimes what someone needs most is not judgement, but dignity, compassion and a chance.”

Someone who offers kindness.

Someone who chooses to help.

Someone who brings hope.

Someone who cares for another.

Someone who gives without expecting.

Why the name

An angel does not have to have wings

An angel can be an ordinary person who chooses to help another person. That is what the word means to me — and it is the only qualification this mission asks for.

“You don’t need wings to be an angel. You simply need to care enough to act.”

I went to Jamaica for a holiday and fell in love with its beauty, warmth and spirit. But I also saw people struggling with poverty and hardship, and animals surviving on the streets without enough food or care.

While visiting the local market, I met an incredible woman, Mrs Jadean. She is an
herbalist, and her faith is as big as her smile.

When we first met in 2025, she shared with me her passion for helping the most
vulnerable people in her community. She told me that she had already taken the
initiative to cook food and distribute it to people who needed it. She wanted to do
it more often, but she simply didn’t have the funds.

We quickly realised that we shared the same passion — to help others, even
when we didn’t have much ourselves.

Mrs Jadean is a well-known and respected member of her community. Despite
having very little herself, she has always found ways to help others. Life is
expensive, and contrary to what many people might think, life in Ocho Rios can
be difficult.

That meeting stayed with me. It was then that I made a promise to myself.

I would come back.
And I would help.

A year later, I travelled back to Jamaica alone, with the hope of building
connections and finding opportunities to collaborate. What started as a promise
became a compassion mission.

I began Angels on the Ground. Jadean and the local volunteers became part of
that journey, giving their time freely to help their own community. The meals are
freshly prepared by Jadean, with ingredients bought locally whenever possible.

People helping people.

People caring for animals.

A community coming together.

Why people and animals

There was never a question of choosing.

My heart wouldn’t let me. So our mission includes both — people who need support and animals who have no voice.

Both deserve kindness

Both deserve compassion

Both deserve a chance

Compassion Has No Boundaries

Compassion has no boundaries. Every act of kindness, no matter how small, has the power to make a meaningful difference in someone’s life. By caring for others, offering support, and standing together in difficult times, we can create a world where everyone feels valued, respected, and never alone.
